Robert Winsor Institute

An Institution where Children can Grow and Acquire Life Skills

Things to Be Aware of in Talent Industry

The first challenge that an aspiring model or actor must overcome is to avoid the negative agencies. It's an old trick done up by some foul agency out for your money and with no intention of finding you any work. It can be a real bad scene if you're not careful. But luckily there are ways to figure out who's on your side.

Honest agencies like The Robert Winsor Institute Acting Classes will be fully licensed, older than a loaf of bread and with a recognizable client list -- all signs that the agency is on the level, and looking to work with you rather than just charge you money. What will cost you is getting your model composites made, but this is a necessary expense, as that's what the agency will use to find you jobs. Work with the agency to get the composites made and you'll be well on your way to a good relationship.

Hard Work Ethics

The development of a strong work ethic is the secret ingredient in starting a successful career. Sure, you can be confident and charismatic, but you better be willing to put in the hours, to work harder than anyone, if you want to get yourself out there. That's the real talent in the industry -- drive.

So now you get to consider what kinds of lights you're going to want to get in front of. Will it be for print ads? Runways? Commercials? Will you be in the next viral music video hit? Or try your hand at television and film? The film industry produces shows all over the place, so believe me -- there's probably a place for you somewhere. And if you're not sure what kind of work you want to do, the agency can help you sort that out too. It may be that you end up somewhere totally different than where you started. Sometimes we don't recognize our own strengths.

Do You Have What it Takes?

Do you think you've got the right stuff for the modeling or acting game? It's very possible you do, even if you're not a twenty-foot-tall Brazilian teenager. Talent agencies really want real people with everyday looks to send to casting directors. And they don't care if you're young or old, or whether you have previous experience. They just want to see you work hard.

Don't run screaming from the room. Please. Really. It's not so bad. A good agency will give you a bag to breathe into and walk you through the process of headshots and auditions, right up to that moment when you walk into a room and the lights point your way and you hear those cameras start up.

The Robert Winsor Institute Acting Classes may be the right choice for your child, if you want to hone his acting, writing, and performing art skills. It's a multi-disciplinary program that's open to young actors.

If you are an actor, you know that in your profession that you need to take excellent care of your body and keep it in tiptop shape! You might think that this is simply because actors and anyone in Hollywood is beautiful and in great shape, this is not the case. It is because, with a body that is physically fit, you will have the ability to play many different characters based on your physical capabilities.

For you, this means one thing. To be the best actor that you can possibly be, you have to be as fit as you can possibly be. Just in case you are misinterpreting the definition fit doesn't mean thin. Fit means that you are flexible, strong, and have a high level of stamina for the job that you are pursuing.

Flexibility for a good reason: One of the most overlooked areas of fitness today is the ability to be flexible. Yoga has really emphasized how much flexibility training can contribute to ones overall fitness levels. You may not realize this, but being flexible is good for your body in every way and makes your body much less prone to injury. It also makes your body stronger to withstand stress.

For many individuals this may sound crazy, but most of the time, acting on a set means you will be spending a very long day with a lot of repetitive motion. This is especially hard on one’s body; even the healthiest bodies take a lot of abuse during an acting career. This is why it is so important to take care of you. Because actors have to worry about so many different things when it comes to their career, physical fitness is often forgotten about. This is a very important one to add to your list of to-dos.

Now that you understand how important flexibility is in an actor's career, you need to understand how important stamina is for your career as well. Those long days that I referred to, require a great deal of cardiovascular fitness on your part. In no way do I believe that more out of shape individuals can't act, but after they complete a long twelve or thirteen hour shoot, they are probably not giving their all on the set. If you were given the choice between this actor that I just described, or the actor how has stamina and gives 120% at the end of the day, which would you cast to be in your production?

Just keep these things in mind and you will be setting yourself apart from your competition by light years.

In a manner of speaking you have, naturally, been breathing all your life. But the chances are you haven't been breathing naturally for a long time. This acting exercise will have you breathing new life into your characters.
With good posture, stand in front of a mirror. Put one hand on your chest, and the other hand on the upper part of your abdomen.

Take a big, deep breath.

Did your chest swell up with that breath? Did you get small around the waist? If so, you need some reminders about correct, natural breathing.

We have in the lower part of the thorax, or chest cavity, a floor of muscle that is also the roof of the abdominal cavity, separating one from the other. This is the diaphragm.

Try another exercise by lying down on the floor. Just relax. Don't even think about your breathing. Place your hands flat against your floating ribs at the sides and notice how the entire region, all the way around to the back, contracts and expands as you breathe, while your chest remains immobile. Notice, too, how the floating ribs now seem to have a very direct contact with the diaphragm.

Get a piece of string and make a lasso. Slip the lasso around the diaphragm region and, keeping the end of the string taut, notice how it lengthens and shortens as you breathe, while your chest remains immobile.
Stand up again and attach your chest, fixed and high, to your imaginary hook. Breathe just as you did while you were lying on the floor, again checking the expansion and contraction of your diaphragm with your lasso.

This is a good acting exercise for breathing. It may seem strange for you to breathe this way if you've been told most of your life to "take deep breaths with your chest." But don't be disturbed about it you are now following nature's way of breathing, and she'll help you acquire the habit of breathing in her own sensible manner. Nature is on your side.
All animals breathe in this fashion. You breathed in the same correct, natural way when you were an infant.

Here is an exercise in breathing and performing a specific action at the same time.

Acting Exercise
Start from a sitting position with hands on knees. As you inhale, move one hand up to your top shirt button. Start the movement and a breath at the same instant. End the movement (at the top shirt button) at the exact peak of your intake of breath.

As you exhale, return the hand to its original position (on the knee). Arrive at this original position at the same instant the final expiration of your breath takes place.

By coordinating a movement exactly with your breathing, you have experienced the use of a potential power tool of acting. So keep practicing until you have mastered it
Focus your mind on diaphragmatic breathing and let your mind tell your body what to do. You'll soon get back to breathing as well as you did when you were born!

Nature intended that you should breathe with the diaphragm. It's healthful for your general well-being in daily living. And it's necessary to you as an actor. With diaphragmatic breathing, you control the breath and get compressed air, necessary for keeping balanced energy under all the vibrations of the speech instrument.

As you may know, compressed air is one of the strongest sources of power known to science. It's used to stop trains, to drive pneumatic drills, and in many other mechanical processes requiring enormous power.
To acquire vocal vitality and control, make use of the same kind of power that science has found so useful. Nature has already given you the necessary equipment.

Breathe correctly and practice this acting exercise and you will improve the technique of your acting.

Stanislavski's acting technique has inspired all the major acting methods developed in America in the twentieth century, yet a lot of beginning actors still find it difficult to understand. For a quick look at the basics of the "Stanislavski system", below are four of Stanislavski's acting principles, each illustrated by a simple acting exercise.

1) Using your imagination to create real emotions on stage

Stanislavski encouraged his students to use the magic if to believe in the circumstances of the play. Actors use their imagination to answer questions like:

  • "What if what happens in the scene was really happening to me?"
  • "Where do I come from?"
  • "What do I want?"
  • "Where am I going?"
  • "What will I do when I get there?"

A simple exercise you can do anywhere to develop your imagination is to simply observe people surrounding you as you go about your daily life (for example, in the subway or at the coffee shop). Then, invent details about their lives and use your observations to make up a biography for each person. The next step is to write the biography of a character you're playing.

2) Action versus Emotion
Stanislavsky encouraged his students to concentrate on actions rather than emotions. In every scene, the actor has an objective (a goal of what he wants to accomplish) and faces a series of obstacles. To reach his goal, the actor breaks the scene down into beats, with each beat being an active verb, something the character does to try to reach his objective. Here are a few examples of active verbs that can be actions in scenes:

  • To help
  • To hurt
  • To praise
  • To demean
  • To leave
  • To keep
  • To convince

A simple exercise to get used to this way of working is to get a piece of paper and continue this list, adding as many active verbs as you can think of.

3) Relaxation and Concentration
Actors who study Stanislavski's acting method learn to relax their muscles. The goal is to not use any extra muscles than the ones needed to perform a particular action on stage. They also work on concentration so they can reach a state of solitude in public and not feel tense when performing on stage. In this acting technique, relaxation and concentration go hand in hand.

Here's a simple Stanislavski concentration exercise to get started...
Close your eyes and concentrate on every sound you hear, from the loudest to the quietest: a door slamming in the distance, a ruffle of the leaves in the trees outside, the hum of the air conditioner, etc. Try to focus solely on sounds, excluding everything else from your mind. The next step is to open your eyes and try to retain the same amount of focus.

4) Using the senses
Stanislavsky students practiced using their senses to create a sense of reality on stage. For example, if their character just walked indoors and it was snowing outside, they may work on an exercise to remember what being outdoors in the snow feels like so they can have a strong sense of where they're coming from.

Here's a quick example of how you would approach that type of exercise...

Close your eyes and imagine you are outdoors in the snow, then ask yourself the following five questions:

  • What do you see? Is the snow pristine? Muddy? Is it sparkling in the sun? Is it more of a dark cloudy day?
  • What do you smell? How cold is the air as it enters your nostrils and goes down to your lungs?
  • What do you hear? Is it more quiet than usual?
  • What do you feel? How does the snow feel as it falls on your face? Is it sticky? Powdery? Wet? Are your toes cold?
  • What do you taste? Imagine that a snowflake falls on your lips. How does it taste?
  • Is your throat dry from the cold?

Of course, there's a lot more to Stanislavski than these four acting principles. Among other things, Stanislavski developed several exercises to help actors build a character "from the outside in" through physicality and voice. These techniques are described in his book, Building a Character, the second in a trilogy of must-read acting books by this great actor and director.

Power Tool: LISTENING.

Listening is where the magic lives...
Listening is opening up and hearing with not only your ears, but with each of your senses. To really hear the rain or take that moment to really taste the ice cream, or allow your eyes to take in the light through the trees in the early morning; these are all forms of listening.

Listening is being aware in the moment, like when a lover listens to your body and follows its message, or when a friend picks up on your indirect cues to leave the party and together you go. Listening is not only about hearing words, but being engaged with the whole communication of another and hearing with sensory intuition.

A skilled actor understands how to listen for more than just the words, sounds and tonality, but also with an emptiness inside that needs to be filled by the other character. When you listen to others, what do you really listen for? And what is your character listening for?

Listening is the first real obligation required to carry out a believable truthfulness in the moment. It creates an honest connection between scene partners. The actor has to surrender the planned response to allow a true response that can only come when really listening. Nothing can replace it.

To listen is to put your attention on the other actor and what is being said both verbally and non-verbally. You watch, you hear, you wait; you are captivated in an active process. You can even listen to the silence of someone. Listening is taking in emotional reactions, body language, facial expressions and energy.

We live in the moment, uncertain of what the next moment will bring.

You can't "act" listening.
Never pretend to listen. Sometimes actors will move their head up and down, nodding or shaking their head, acting as if they are listening. How can you know whether you can agree or disagree until the other actor has finished their thought? You have to wait and really hear the actual thing that will generate your response.

The only way to listen is to honestly engage in the activity of listening.

When you really listen, your line deliveries gain nuances and become organic. Once this occurs, everything about the work can fall into place. When you really listen, you concern yourself with receiving the other actor—responding not in the way you previously planned, but with what naturally comes forth. It is genuinely accepting and connecting to what is being given.

Your listening dictates the delivery of your lines.
The connection is above the communication

Have you ever engaged in a conversation in such a way that you forget what you were going to say next? The organic response that comes from that conversation is a true connection. What you were going to say isn't as important as the experience with the person with whom you are conversing.

Sometimes actors make the written words more important than listening to what lives beneath them. The truth of life is that the communication never rises above the connection.

Another life truth is how we listen. We respond differently in every relationship. Wouldn't you prefer to hear bad news from one person rather than from another? We have special bonds with a select few. All of that is taken into consideration as part of the real communication.

You can put an actor on an empty stage with a single light and the actor's gift will emerge -- because an actor needs only access to their imagination. In acting, it's not about the venue; it's about the freedom within to access character and emotion.

In fact, the more limits or boundaries you put on an actor, the more creative the actor will become. This is how great direction works. The director will give you a new way to act the scene and it is your freedom that will allow you to deliver it in such a way that the direction becomes genius. A great actor understands this flexibility. Your freedom allows you to inspire greatness in others, which brings the project up as a whole. This is true for writers, artists, poets, musicians and any artistic expression born from the gift to create.

All that an actor has is the sense of their own internal freedom to express; this freedom delivers confidence, depth, and the euphoria of a process that happens because it comes from you, and is held by you from within.

So how do you tap into your own freedom to create?

When you release judgment of yourself and your process, you are free to tap into the creative process. The less judgment you put on yourself in the process, the more freedom you will gain. The less you judge the script, other actors, or the direction, the more inspired you will be to deliver a performance that makes an impact.

Ask any artist who taps into their creativity, what is it that allows that creativity to flow?

Most will tell you that creativity demands that you get out of your own way. Think of a time when you were in the moment, being a character who is free to express… believing in the writing, the direction and the other actors. A true creative collaboration is what we are all striving for in this business. Enjoy the process!

Over the next two weeks, observe your judgments and begin allowing yourself to be more neutral to your process. Forgive your judgments and put them aside. Focus on the enjoyment of the process itself, and take the risks necessary to experience that source that lives inside - let the internal light within you, your instincts, be your guide.

Speaking skills are the bones to all business professionals who plan on moving ahead with their jobs and careers. Yet, the other key skill that will give any professional the fine distinction from everyone else is having drama skills. So, what is it that drama training encompasses that can transfer the serious stereotypical image of the die-hard business person into a dynamic person? For the manager, supervisor, or budget-conscious personality type there are three critical skills that make a marriage between business and drama:

1 Discovering your Voice

Techniques to improve your speech and diction such as breathing and resonance will make a difference to the overall power of your voice. You may be using only 20% of the potential power that your voice could impact on your listeners. Part of finding your voice is showing you how to relax your body and your voice together. Communication utilizing your skill to project to few or many is a drama essential skill.

2 Developing Improvisation

Drama trainers take you through exercises and situations in which you need to respond immediately without preparation. The ability to improvise is a life skill that improves with practice. The results allow you to answer questions spontaneously, improve teamwork and corporate presentation presence. You tap into the inner resources of your acting skills to fit the business challenge.

3 Rehearsing Diverse Content

From poetry, prose, plays there is a wide range of material that a Drama Coach will have you practice with to improve your skills in getting to the heart of the matter. You will not only learn how to focus and immerse yourself into the presence of your characters or situations; but to convey the words into believable images by using your voice and body language to the audience. Acting skills enhance your message to give your presentations that extra dimension.

By stepping it up and out-of-the-box your career moves along with the meaningful expression that you now have the skill to convey. Your mentor to success will not only challenge and feed your creativity but will give you life skills to keep in your toolbox forever.

They say actors are born not made. This is true to a large extent. But actors need to bring out their inborn talent and skills in acting. And this is what an acting coach is made for. So, if you want to be a good, make that natural actor, by all means, get an acting coach like Mr. Robert Winsor, a British born American citizen.

Qualities of a Good Coach
Find a good coach, and you'll transform as a better actor. You'll know a good acting coach when he or she possesses the following characteristics:

1) The ability to read people, listen to what they do not say, and identify their innate talents and skills in acting that have not yet been brought out.
2) A good coach will be able to show you how to use your natural talent to act and not tell you what to do to act. You see, acting is best learned by practice and not taught.
3) His or her ability to connect your 'rawness' in acting to the myriad of characters and roles that you will have to portray. Acting is genuinely living the characters that are make-believe. Your coach should also be able to show you how to disconnect to the characters after the portrayal.
4) A genuine coach should be able to guide you, in a benevolent way manipulate you, to squeeze the intrinsic acting talent you have and apply it to portraying the roles that you have to play.
5) An effective coach knows how to listen and to respect your qualities both as an actor and as his or her learner.

Why You Need to Get a Coach to Become a Better Actor
Every person regardless of profession and career needs to undergo some coaching in whatever form and stages in his life. You need someone who'll be able to motivate you, push you to your limits in a way, challenge you, and bring out the best in you.

As an actor or a person wanting to become a better actor, you'll need that coach who will show you how to stay committed and accountable to your craft. Your coach shall also be able to help you make that important decision as to whether or not to pursue acting as a career. You'll also be able to appreciate better and find fulfillment in the roles that you portray as an actor.

How a Good Acting Coach Will Help You Become the Kind of Actor That You Want
You can become the kind of actor that you want with the help of a good acting coach. Your coach will encourage you to realize your potentials as you want it, find the purpose for wanting to become a better actor, and guide you on how to use your acting potentials to achieve your goals.

A good coach will go beyond showing you how to become a better actor through your innate acting talent and some techniques and methodologies, your coach will help you become 'real' actors and in the process become better persons.

No matter how high quality the class, there is one thing acting classes are not responsible for and that is your auditioning technique. Audition tapes are a big part of the process now. An expensive, professional video is okay for an audition tape but, certainly not necessary. Just borrow or rent a camera, enlist the help of an aspiring director friend and follow these simple rules.

How you appear is key, and lighting is a big part of this. Strong shadows falling in the wrong places can eliminate your chances of producers watching the tape all the way through. Looking completely washed out from lights that are too strong or close doesn't work either. If the lighting serves as a distraction to your performance you've wasted your time. Lighting needs to be clean, and completely unnoticeable. A professional acting program, especially acting classes, should have someone on staff that has experience producing tapes. Ask for help creating a simple diagram that outlines a lighting scheme.

There should be two or three light sources. Lights can be placed on either side of the talent to help illuminate the face. Then a third light can be used to fill in the background. Some audition tapes have chosen to leave the background dark. While this can work you must be careful to that the overall feel of the tape is appropriate and not distracting. The all important next step is the white balance on the camera.

This reads the color temperatures of the combined light sources. They range from being very yellow to very blue. Let's say you set up the lighting, and you are also near a window. A mix of light sources is possible but, the camera must be "balanced" to correct for these color differences. The white balance feature is used to make this correction quickly and automatically. A pure white card or sheet of paper needs to be placed in the middle of the lighting sources. If you do not use this feature the color will be completely off, especially your skin tones. You want good clean skin tones, eye color and hair color, so you must not forget this step.

Another very important thing to consider is sound. A good audition tape is only as good as the sound, because your voice is your main instrument. No one wants to sit through a tape that they can't hear. Keep the mic as close to the talent as possible. While easy, the camera mounted microphones are usually not very high quality. Communicating character, and a sense of which you are as an actor depends on what you sound like so making it great. Acting classes sometimes have ways to help with this.

On to content, the all important piece of the puzzle, the character you are portraying, or a sense of whom you are as an actor. An audition prepared for taping has some slight differences. Preparation can be made easier if you've studied Meisner acting techniques with trained coaches. Using the Meisner acting tools can help create a riveting audition tape that does not seem rehearsed or staged. Anyone who has studied Meisner acting will understand that acting is as much about what you leave out as what you put in. Cramming every emotion and gesture into a performance will always seem false. The key to great acting is what you don't present, but leave simmering underneath. Audiences like to work, think, and look for clues which are a way to engage them in your performance.

At times, actors are asked to include something very specific, but it should still have your own ideas incorporated. More frequently actors are asked to turn in monologue audition tapes, just to give viewers an idea of their range and abilities. Whether you have the gift of comedy, or a talent for dramatic roles, a great audition includes both. The greatest actors are well rounded and can include many layers of abilities during a short piece. Audiences identify easily with a comic figure's dark moments, and like to laugh briefly to endure intense drama.

Maybe your son or daughter displays some talent as an actor. The local school play, gave her chance to shine. Some kids love acting, we are drawn to be someone else, and very often we can have much fun acting out the fantasy. Let's face it fantasies can be fun.
The job of the actor has no dependence of age or stage, but only to the degree of intensity to which it is carried out. Actors are born, and the job requires a skill set that can be identified and be developed with proper coaching. Some personal traits are required for success as an actor, whose job can include creating magical moments that seem realistic.

Robert Winsor a British born American citizen, a Thespian and Producer says that a good actor or actress must be able to concentrate. Playing the part of someone else can be crucial. In many instances, it takes time and effort to get into character. Minor distractions can often lead to a loss of focus and the character may no longer seem real or believable.

Actors are learners: Acting can be a difficult to the unprepared. What may seem as simple and effortless may have been developed with years of practice. Actors must be good listeners, because they must interact with others. It is absolutely essential that they communicate and react to the actions of other people.

They should also be excellent communicators. Communication can be spoken or with actions, but is imperative that actors be effective communicators.

Actors must be disciplined. Despite the stories that may abound about the lifestyles of the rich and famous, successful must have the ability to be disciplined. There are routines that must be followed effectively, throughout production periods and any deviation can dramatically change the outcome. Actors are required to remain in character both, physically and emotionally, and this requires a lot of discipline.

Actors must be able to express emotion freely and impulsively, using both the body and the voice. One of the jobs assumed by the actor is to create unforgettable moments and a vivid imagination is often necessary. Actors are also good story tellers through expression and should be able to emote whenever necessary. This implies a lack of self-consciousness, but it can be seen as more as a lacking the display of self conscious behaviour, as some actors can also be very private persons.

Actors must be imaginative. The imaginary people we develop as kids can ad a lot to careers. Dreams have been known to come true and hard work is required to develop and connect to your imagination. Imagination is fuel that drives the actions.

Finally, the ability to express requires that great actors have a flexible and expressive voice, connecting a highly developed imagination to a flexible and supportive body. All of these characteristics can be developed to some degree with proper training, but the innate ability should pre-exist.

The Robert Winsor Institute has been providing coaching sessions for children, giving them a platform for expression and a great sense of poise, focus, and self-confidence.

The graduate of the Robert Winsor Institute are the most successful actors in the business. Auditions to join our educational environment take place almost daily.
